First Glimpse Around Town - El Salvador

First Impressions

Moving to a new country is always an adventure, and my first few weeks in El Salvador have been filled with surprises. Antiguo Cuscatlán, the neighborhood we now call home, is a fascinating blend of the familiar and the unexpected. Through these first-look photos, I want to share some of the things that have caught my eye.

1. A Taste of Home in a New Place
One of the first things that surprised me was seeing places I recognized from the U.S.—Walmart, Denny’s, and other familiar stores and restaurants. Riding past them in this new setting made me feel an odd mix of comfort and curiosity. While these businesses look similar to their U.S. counterparts, they have their own Salvadoran twist, making me eager to explore the differences.

2. The Ever-Present Volcano

No matter where we go, the volcano is following us. Whether driving through the city or standing in our neighborhood, its towering presence in the background is a constant reminder of El Salvador’s dramatic natural beauty. It’s both breathtaking and humbling to have such a magnificent landmark as part of our daily view.

3. Navigating Traffic: A Unique Experience
The roads here are a mix of bustling highways and charming neighborhood streets. One thing that stood out was that bikes and motorcycles zip around traffic. During terrible traffic one Saturday, a pop-up extra line for motorcycles emerged. Traffic has its own rhythm, and Mike is comfortably adapting to it.

Final Thoughts
These first few weeks in El Salvador have given me much to take in. The mix of familiar sights and completely new experiences makes every outing exciting. I look forward to learning more about this beautiful country and sharing the journey.
